Why Seahawks Drew Lock not Geno Smith is expected to be Seat

The Seahawks are dealing with questions at the quarterback position for the first time in a decade. They traded long-time starter Ru sell Wilson to the Broncos during the 2022 NFL offseason, and that left them without a proven starter on the roster.

As such, it was expected that Seattle would target a quarterback during the 2022 NFL Draft. Instead, the Seahawks didn't select a single pa ser and notably pa sed on Malik Willis four separate times.

When that happened, it was presumed that they would be in the running for Baker Mayfield should the Browns trade him. However, ESPN' Vinny Curry Jerseys s Dianna Ru sini reported on May 3 that and are comfortable "riding" a quarterback who is already on their roster.

That would be Drew Lock. The after he spent the first three seasons  Michael Carter Jerseys of his career with the Broncos. The 2019 second-round pick is currently behind Geno Smith on the depth chart but is expected to overtake the veteran as he gets more acclimated to Seattle's offense.

Lock has a career record of just 8-13 as a starter and has completed just 59.4 percent of his pa ses for 4,740 yards, 25 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. So, why is Seattle willing to trust him? It's all about their confidence in his abilities and fit with the team.

2022 NFL DRAFT:

Why Drew Lock is expected to start for the Seahawks

There are two reasons that Lock is favored to start for the Seahawks. The first is that Seahawks GM John Schneider seems very confident in his abilities as a quarterback.

reports that Schneider "really liked" Lock ahead of the 2019 NFL Draft. In fact, he likened his acquisition in the Wilson trade to that of Jared Goff in the Matthew Stafford trade.

Lock was no throw-in, at least in Seattles view, to the Ru sell Wilson trade (similar to how the Lions genuinely liked, and wanted to add, Jared Goff in the Matthew Stafford trade a year ago).

It doesn't  Quincy Williams Jerseys seem that Schneider's confidence in Lock has waned  at least not yet. Shortly after acquiring Lock, Schneider was asked whether the team would add another player at the quarterback position. He said the team would "continue to explore options" but acknowledged that the team was high on Lock's potential.

We have a ton of faith in Drew, Schneider said, via .

Were excited about a change of scenery for him.  Hes a guy, in my opinion, the media beat down a little bit. So were excited to get him into our culture with our coaching  Tyler Conklin Jerseys staff, and well continue to look for guys to compete with him.

While Schneider vowed to add competition for Lock, the Seahawks have made just one move at quarterback since that trade in early March. The was re-signing Smith, who has been a backup since his third season with the Jets in 2015.

The other part of the equation, as Breer notes, is Lock's fit in Seattle's offense. Shane Waldron is entering his second season as the team's offensive coordinator and runs a system that is very similar to that of Rich Scangarello.

Lock's splits with Scangarello, who coached him in just five games as a rookie, and without him are stark.

Suffice to say that being in a Scangarello-type system could benefit Lock. Perhaps Waldron could provide him that and help him to stabilize his play and avoid errant pa ses and turnovers.

Seahawks QB depth chart

Below is a look at how the Seahawks' quarterback depth chart currently shakes out.

RankPlayer1Geno Smith2Drew Lock3Jacob Eason

It's not a surprise that Smith is currently serving as the Seahawks' No. 1 quarterback. He has the current edge over Lock because of "familiarity," as .

That makes sense. After all, Smith is entering his fourth season with the team while  Bryce Hall Jerseys Lock is entering just his fourth year in the league. And Lock has only been with the Seahawks for about two-and-a-half months as of this writing, so he will need time to get up to speed on his new team's offense.

That said, once Seattle installs its offense at OTAs and training camp, Lock will be given plenty of opportunities to compete with Smith for the starting job. And it seems that the Seahawks would prefer that Lock win it.

Of course, it's still early. Maybe Smith will remain atop the depth chart, or maybe the Seahawks will pursue someone like Mayfield or Jimmy Garoppolo to shore up their quarterback room.

But regardle  Al Toon Jerseys s of what happens, Seattle seems to have high hopes for Lock. it's just a matter of whether they pan out.
