How to recover a Facebook account when you can't log in

Have trouble logging in to Facebook? Whether you have forgotten your login details or your Facebook account has been hacked, there is no reason to panic. There are a few different ways to recover a Facebook.com/Login/Identify Not Working when you can't log in.

If you think your account has been hacked, you should probably review Facebook's top privacy tips and make sure it doesn't happen again. But if for some reason you can't remember your login details, the simple recovery process should help you access Facebook again.

Check if you are still connected

It sounds silly, but the first thing to do if you're logged out of your account is to check if you still have an active Facebook session on one of your devices. For example, if you can't log in to your Facebook on your smartphone, you may still be logged in on your desktop and vice versa.

This is probably the easiest way to recover a Facebook account, as all you need to do here is manually change your password in your account's privacy settings.

So if you find that you still have an active Facebook session on one of your devices, follow these steps.

  • Click the dropdown arrow in the top right corner of the screen and choose Settings.

  • In the menu on the left side, select Security and sign in.

  • Under Sign-in, look for Change password. Click Edit to change your password. In case you don't remember your current password, click Forgot your password? to reset it using your email address or phone number.

  • After doing that, if you suspect that someone hacked your account, in the same menu, go to Where are you connected.

How to change my Facebook login mail id

Your Facebook account is generally associated with an email address that you use to log in when you visit the site or use the Facebook mobile application. If you change your email address or no longer wish to use it to log in to Facebook for any reason, you can change the email ID associated with your account.

Change your email ID on Facebook

You can add or remove the email addresses and phone numbers that you use to log in to your Facebook account and receive messages on Facebook.

Use the settings menu to change your contact information

To do this, click the menu icon in the upper right corner of the Facebook website. Then click "Settings".

Use the contact submenu

Next, click on the "General" tab and click on "Contact" to access the contact information submenu.

Add new email addresses

Add new email addresses by clicking "Add another email or mobile number" and typing in your email address. When you add a new address, you may need to confirm your Facebook password and click on an email that Facebook sends you to verify that it is the correct address, and you will have access to it.

Delete old email addresses

If there are email addresses that you no longer want associating with your account, click the "remove" link next to each one.

Choose a Primary Facebook Email ID

Select a primary address that you want Facebook to use when it needs to contact you and that you can use to log in to the site. To do this, use the radio buttons to select one of your email addresses. When you're done making changes, click "Save Changes." If you make a mistake, click "Cancel".

Make a Facebook username

In addition to choosing a primary email address, you can optionally choose a username associated with your account. This will be visible when people visit your profile, so make sure you choose one that you want to associate with your account.

You must have a unique username; your username can only contain letters, numbers and periods; must be at least five characters long and cannot contain web domain extensions such as ".com". In general, you should not impersonate someone else or be offensive.

How do I change or reset my password?

Change your password

  • To change your password on Facebook if you're already logged in:

  • Tap the menu at the top right of Facebook.

  • Scroll down and tap Settings, then tap Security & Login.

  • Tap Change password.

  • Type your current and new password and retype the new password, then tap Save Changes.

If you're signed in but have forgotten your password, follow the steps in Change your password, then tap Forgot your password? and follow the steps to reset it. Please note that you will need access to the email associated with your account.

Reset your password

  • To reset your password if you're not logged into Facebook:

  • Did tap forget your password?

  • Follow the instructions on the screen.

For security reasons, you will not be able to use the same mobile phone number that you use for two-factor authentication to help you reset your password. You will need to add a different mobile phone number or email address to your account to reset your password if you ever need to.

If you're still having trouble, we can help you get your account back.
